National Road 222 is 226 km long, crossing Portugal from west to east (or from east to west if you prefer), almost always with the Douro River as company. More specifically, the EN222 connects the coastal city of Vila Nova de Gaia to the town of Almendra, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, located just a stone's throw from our neighboring Spain.

The section between Peso da Régua and Pinhão is considered the most scenic of Estrada Nacional 222, having even earned it the title of the most beautiful road in the world (World Best Driving Road). It's only 27 kilometers, that's for sure. But in this section alone you will have no less than 93 curves and more than a handful of straights, perfect for enjoying the overwhelming landscapes of the Douro Wine Region.

It is possible to travel along the EN222 throughout the year, but it is undeniable that the harvest season (September and October) is the best time of year to travel along Estrada Nacional 222. It is not very difficult to see why. In addition to the wonderful autumnal colors, which paint the Douro valley in countless shades of yellow, orange and red, most Douro farms offer interesting programs in which visitors have the possibility of participating in the traditional grape picking and crushing in the mills.

But if autumn is king in the Douro Valley and on Estrada Nacional 222, spring is king. Seeing the vineyards after their buds have sprouted, covering the steep Douro hills in green, is an equally brutal scene. And in the Foz Côa area there is also the (huge) bonus of seeing the almond trees in bloom.
