National Route 2 by bike

Estrada Nacional 2 (N2) is the longest Portuguese road, totaling 739.26 kilometers, and the only one in Europe that crosses a country along its entire length (there are only two more in the world: Route 66, in the USA, and Ruta 40, in Argentina). It extends from North to South, connecting the city of Chaves, in Trás-os-Montes, to the city of Faro, in the Algarve.

Along its route it passes through 35 municipalities (Chaves, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Vila Real, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Peso da Régua, Lamego, Castro Daire, São Pedro do Sul, Viseu, Tondela, Santa Comba Dão, Mortágua, Penacova , Vila Nova de Poiares, Lousã, Góis, Pedrogão Grande, Sertã, Vila de Rei, Sardoal, Abrantes, Ponte de Sor, Avis, Mora, Coruche, Montemor-o-Novo, Viana do Alentejo, Alcácer do Sal, Ferreira do Alentejo , Aljustrel, Castro Verde, Almodôvar, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Faro), known as interior municipalities.

Despite the demographic decline in recent years in the “interior”, this Route covers a population neighborhood of 689,079 inhabitants, has bridges over 11 rivers and runs through 11 mountains. Full of mysticism, material and immaterial heritage and unique characteristics, the National Road Route 2 is the purest way to get to know Portugal, its diversity, culture, landscape, demography, gastronomy and heritage, recognized worldwide.

The history of the road is intertwined with the history of many of us, for the most diverse and curious reasons. Who hasn't counted cars, played football or a spinning top, or simply placed their bare foot on this floor?
